about world in my eyes
the “world in my eyes” series is inspired by classic black and white photography capturing the magic of light and shade of urban landscapes, which hide and simultaneously showcase its edifices – the grandiosity of engineering structures, which sometimes cross the boundaries of science – the sensuality of female curves, which are an incessant appeal and inspiration for mankind and the beauty of people, which are devoted to their profession. with my photography I strive to capture unique moments and places in different angles yet classic views.
inspiration
black and white photography has been an inspiration from when I was young due to its artistic and metropolitan flair created in the pictures of Brassai and others. I started with colour photography in my hometown ulm where I tried to capture the lights of the city and its surrounding nature. from the beginning the magnificent light of the blue hour is a permanent inspiration for my photography. through a friend I discovered the magic procedures of a darkroom, hence my first black and white print originated from a colour negative. from that moment I was devoted to black and white photography.
about
having spent about twenty years in a medieval town with the tallest gothic steeple in the world, you cannot prevent yourself from being curious how people could create such amazing structures. from all directions, the spire casts its shadows onto the roof of its surrounding buildings as a constant variation of a theme and an ever-changing motive for my photography. as my hometown was largely destroyed in the second world war, I also had a desire to understand how the town looked before its destruction. in the historic black and white photographies of my hometown I discovered an atmosphere of tranquillity and urban flair, which inspired my photography and led to my interest in architecture and urban development.
my education as a structural engineer brought me to places such as lyon, nottingham, london and paris, where I tried to capture this atmosphere with my camera during my studies and my early years in my professional career, I frequently travelled to new places in different metropolitan towns, which I am fond of discovering with my camera. today I live in frankfurt, a town with a similar history as my hometown and another variation of inspiring spires. on my frequent journeys my camera is always with me.
